Detectives Steve Moran and half-Brazilian Antoinette Conway are partners on Dublin's Murder Squad, and she resents the fact that they are mostly handed night shifts and domestics. Conway has suffered ongoing harassment since she joined the squad, which was her dream job. Though she's as tough as they come, and likes Steve, 'a chirpy little bollix', she's near burnout and is seriously considering quitting and working in a security agency.

Then they are assigned yet another slam-dunk domestic, but this one turns out to be a real puzzler. A young woman, Aislinn, is found dead inside her cottage - accident or murder? Given their inexperience, their boss, O'Kelly, assigns veteran Squad detective Breslin as backup. Though they do their best to sideline him, he presses them hard to arrest Aislinn's nerdy boyfriend Rory. But they're not convinced of his guilt. And why is Aislinn's best friend so evasive when they question her?

The chip on Conway's shoulder weighs her down as they pursue all kinds of red herrings and she gradually comes to realize how much she has in common with the victim, who was not as clueless as she appeared on the surface. They learn that Aislinn had another, mysterious boyfriend, one who was controlling. The pressure is on, from both O'Kelly and the press, and there are hints of bent cops. The partners end up in very deep water and must decide how great a risk to take with their careers.

As always, Tana French delivers an outstanding, edgy procedural, with a lead that you instinctively root for. This author is high on my mystery must read list!
