You'll be amazed by these stories and may even question the veracity of some of them (showers of fish or worms pelting the earth?) but the author claims they are all true. The book is divided into four basic chapters: Peculiar Precipitation, Any Way the Wind Blows, Freakish Phenomena and Weather Wonders. Within these general subject headings you'll discover short accounts between one and five paragraphs long about actual events, plus time lines that chart a series of similar odd events. For example, the timeline for Falling Fauna extends from 1680 to 2007 and briefly indicates where an odd collection of critters (rats, lizards, snakes, beetles, and even small alligators) fell from the sky. The locations range from Germany, Montreal, Canada and Memphis, Tennessee to Worcester, England and Argentina. Not only are these odd events brought to our attention but the author tries to explain, when possible, what caused them. There's a lot of information here and given the format of the book it may be too much to absorb quickly. But no matter how you decide to approach the book (either reading it in small doses or racing through it), you'll want to hang on to it for future reference. Bizarre Weather will come in handy to check when you come across similar odd weather events in the media or when you want to dazzle your friends with your mastery of unusual and odd information. With the holidays not far away, this little book would make a great stocking stuffer for a weather aficionado or anyone who is interested in expanding his or her knowledge of off-beat, mind bending information.
