This is actually a prequel to Kill My Mother, taking place a few years beforehand. Like Kill My Mother, Cousin Joseph deals with the shadier side of Tinseltown. This time, there is a hit put out by Cousin Joseph on a filmmaker whose latest work could be construed as Communist. In the midst of the hit is a factory riot that results in the death of a teenage girl, and the question becomes, was it an accident or murder? Jules Feiffer's illustration style is definitely an acquired taste, but it works very well for the noir genre. It is dark and gritty with a hurried, almost unfinished feel, which helps create the right atmosphere for this type of story. The first two books in the trilogy have been engaging enough to make me curious to see how it will all end.
