Offshore banks and hidden money are not my topic of conversation when with a group of friends. Escape Velocity by Susan Wolfe was presented to me and I thought 'Why not?' Might learn something. And, maybe, enjoy the book. I may not have understood everything that was happening in this financial thriller, but I quickly became enamored of a brilliantly written novel that captured my attention immediately and held it until the very last page. Georgia Griffin is the protagonist, someone you might fall for, but whom you certainly couldn't rely on to tell the truth. She arrives in the Silicon Valley to live in her car until she can afford to rent an apartment. Her main goal is to bring her younger sister Katie-Ann to join her from Piney, Arkansas. Neither sister trusts their mother's minister who eyes Katie-Ann continuously. Georgia lands a paralegal job for Lumina Software and plans to become indispensable to her bosses and coworkers. Nothing she does seems out of bounds in her mind. This is where the book really takes off. She comes close to being ejected from the company many times, but always manages to pull her irons from the fire just in time. She will stop at nothing to secure Katie-Ann's future. The Last Billable Hour is the first of the author's books and received high praise from the New York Times Book Review as well as The San Francisco Chronicle. I am sure that Escape Velocity will earn the same accolades. The only fault I could find is that the book was not long enough. I wanted more.
