Poxl West, or Uncle Poxl to his doting teenage nephew, Eli Goldstein, is a man of intrigue, fearlessness, and with tales of enough adventure to make Indiana Jones look like a couch potato. Young Eli is so enthralled with uncle who seems to be 'the epitome of manhood.'

Poxl's adventures begin when, as a young man barely older than his nephew, he is sent to Holland to escape the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia. When war comes to Holland, Poxl is again on the move, this time to London. There are a few great romances for Poxl in Holland and England that find the young man both scared and confused, along with all the other feelings that accompany being in love. It's in England that Poxl West is determined to seek revenge on the Nazis and he takes to the skies as an RAF bomber pilot.

The adventures, romances, and tragedies he endures along the course of his life are recounted to his nephew through both stories and the publishing of Poxl's memoir. Enamored with his uncle's adventurous and heroic life, Eli comes to to find that his idol may not have been the man that Eli thought he was.

This gripping novel connects the line between past and present through Poxl's memoirs and Eli's reactions to what he is learning about a seemingly great man. The dual voices in the novel lends an interest to this story of heroism, romance, and family during the Second Great War.
