Southern Gothic: A Celine Caldwell Mystery    by Bridgette R. Alexander Order:  USA  Can Paris 1865, 2016 (2016) Softcover, e-Book      Reviewed by Jessica Maguire This is one of the most enjoyable, intelligently written young adult mysteries that I have had the pleasure of reading. The author's knowledge of art really shines through in this clever novel. Sixteen-year-old Celine Caldwell is a wonderful character in this fictional story. The savvy, smart Celine is interning at the Metropolitan Museum of Art where her mother, Julia, is curator. When two paintings go missing, fingers point to Julia. Her mother's prestigious job in jeopardy, Celine receives threats from an unknown, rather frightening man. The next thing she knows Celine is searching for the two paintings, finding a history she never expected, and helping people other than just her mother. It is quite obvious when reading this novel that author Bridgette Alexander knows not only art, but New York City as well. Alexander herself is a modern art historian with international expertise. Her accolades include a partnership with Goldman Sachs and she has worked with museums and galleries including New York, Paris, and Berlin. This interesting, thoughtful novel also added a fun flair by involving the likes of the iconic New York shops Henri Bendel's and Bloomingdales. There is even a reference to Pinky and The Brain from the popular animated series Animaniacs, which I enjoyed in my younger years. Blending the drama and mystery with details of everyday life made the novel even more personable and enjoyable.
