H
onestly, this is not as '
howlingly funny
' as the cover claims but it does have its moments. Pet humor can be a precarious thing when it comes to creating laughter because so much of it falls flat or you end up barking up the wrong tree.
T
his collection of canine jokes is very uneven. While some sections work and do elicit a few laughs and guffaws, others fall quite wide of the mark. To sweeten the pot there are color illustrations that may make this book more appealing to younger readers, but that isn't a sure thing either.
N
ote: the
Salty Dogs
section may not really be appropriate for younger children given some of the
adult dog
humor. The section featuring cats and dogs is a little better, though. or example:
'
Two dogs met at the park and started talking.
'Do you like cats?' One asked the other.
'Yeah,' his companion said.
'Me too. Let's exchange recipes.'
'
Hmmm, maybe that really wasn't that great a joke! Oh, well!
I
f you are into corny animal jokes this collection will probably add a few to your stockpile and it might make a gag gift for someone, but give it some thought first ... then purchase.
