While the book is fiction, Siger must have done his homework very carefully and has woven the facts of Greece's current problems into a carefully crafted tale of intrigue, fraud, intimidation, military dominance, rioting, and, yes, murder. During a protest march, a young woman is singled out to be chased by men dressed militarily and is fatally shot. She is the daughter of a brigadier general – which fact sets off a firestorm of conjecture as to why this girl was singled out to be assassinated – to be a warning to her father? A warning about what? Chief Inspector Andreas Kaldis is charged with rooting out the murderers and bringing them to justice. He is just as concerned with the motivation behind the girl's death. Santorini Caesars is the eighth novel in a series described by the New York Times 'as thoughtful police procedurals set in picturesque but not untroubled Greek locales'. The sub-genre is generally not my bag, but I find this series so well written that I devoured each and every page. I have been to the Greek Islands and fell in love with their beauty as well as the people. Siger portrays both so well that his books are, as I said, must-reads.
