U.S. Army Investigator Alex Klear is called back to action in Afghanistan to investigate the murder of his close friend by an Afghanistan soldier who worked with him (called a green-on-blue crime). The Taliban is very prominent in this tensely written novel.

Klear suspects that the Army has accused the wrong man. Apparently there is a drawn-out trial ongoing in Kabul. Twenty-two bankers are accused of fraud – the biggest bank fraud in history. Almost one billion dollars given to Afghanistan by America has disappeared, while the bankers have been handing out no interest loans by the handfuls to any one they favor. No loan has seen any repayment.

Klear feels that his friend's murder is tied to this and that the man accused of killing his friend is wrongly accused. Klear is thwarted at every turn by both the American and the Afghanistan government. All the while, he is trying to placate his fiancée whom he had promised before this mission to do no more work for the government.

On Edge has a plot that works so well and is written so well that it is very hard to put down. Though a military thriller is not my normal genre, I knew I had a winner in my hands after the first few pages. Satisfyingly long and with plenty of breathtaking scenes, On Edge is well worth the read.

Author Albert Ashforth has served many postings including Group Special Services instructor and NATO officer trainer in Germany. As a military contractor, he has done tours in Bosnia, Macedonia, Germany, Kosovo and Afghanistan. He certainly has the creds to write as he does. And he does it so well.
