Hamish MacBeth is one of my most favorite characters. Created by M. C. Beaton, he lives and polices in the Scottish village of Lochdubh in the Highlands. He is quite content with his life, residing in the back of the small police station with his dog Sonsie and wild cat Lug. The animals accompany him on his police patrols and are very much a part of his low key life.

Hamish has been engaged twice. He ponders why he never took the final step. But he loves his life and doesn't wish for more. Not even a promotion that would move him from Lochdubh to a larger town. It's just not on his agenda.

Hamish has run-ins with Chief Inspector Blair who wants to get rid of him. Blair wants Hamish gone but cannot find a good enough reason to justify firing him. He instructs a rookie policeman to follow Hamish and catch him at something illegal. Unfortunately, the young man is murdered! Soon Hamish is hot on the trail of the murderer which might not be such a good thing. Is his own life in danger?

Death of a Policeman is but one of the delightful tales from Lochdubh. This is the 29th in the series, so many more await your attention. They are full of the life of the village and its residents. It's great beach reading - lie back, enjoy the sun and the sound of the ocean, and walk in Hamish's shoes for the afternoon. You won't regret it.
