Maureen Coughlin has finished her training and is now a bona fide New Orleans cop. Instead of a quiet entrance into a new world, she is presented with a mysterious corpse causing questions without answers. In addition, a late-night traffic stop goes very wrong.

Her world turns upside down. Friends turn out to not really be friends; loyalties drop by the wayside. There are cop haters, and who knows what else waiting around the corner for her to put her foot into. She faces a city overflowing with dysfunction and corruption and must seemingly deal with this on her own.

Doing the Devil's Work by Bill Loehfelm is chock full of unforgettable characters. It's suspenseful, and gritty. Maureen is not the most angelic of cops but she does know right from wrong. Well worth a read.
