id the man behind the locked door commit suicide? Was he murdered? If so, considering the locked door, how was it done? Was it an accident? These are questions the police and family and friends of the dead man are asking. No one has answers. Speculation, sure. But no solid answers.
P
awnbroker and would-be banker Phillip Pimbo is the man shot to death. The coroner, Titus Cragg, is pretty sure it's suicide. Dr. Luke Fidelis doesn't agree. Digging into Pimbo's private life, it is discovered that he must have been involved in the slave trade! Preston's Mayor Ephraim Grimshaw seems in a hurry to put the matter to rest and is willing to accuse anyone nearby of murder. As a result an innocent young girl resides in jail.
T
he year is 1742, and this is the third mystery in the intriguing Cragg & Fidelis series. It brings back Titus Cragg and his beguiling wife Elizabeth, who enjoys assisting her husband when presented with a problem. I enjoyed the mystery, with its good touches of life back in those days. Great for beach reading.
