Miles Off Course by Sulari Gentill takes the reader back to 1933 Australia. Wealthy bohemian Rowland Sinclair basically supports several of his friends. They are all artists of some sort or other. He has money; they don't. So their arrangement makes sense to him. He likes living in his luxurious family mansion where all that he might want is just a fingertip away. Needless to say, his friends are happy with the arrangement also.

Rowly has a conservative brother, Wilfred, who dislikes this arrangement, but the home belongs to Rowly, so there isn't much he can say. When an important meeting for the family business looms, the family's long time stockman has gone missing. He is more than just an employee; he has been with the family for years and they feel an obligation to him.

The stockman, Harry Simpson, is an aborigine and some feel he has just gone on a walkabout and will turn up soon. The brothers, however, do not share that belief. They insist a search must be made for him. This leads to an almost rollicking adventure for the artistic bunch. There are gangsters, spies and murder on the hunt, turning a lark into serious business. Several famous Australian historical figures manage to put in an appearance. Also the politics of the times are of interest. Some things never change.

Miles Off Course follows close behind A Few Right-Thinking Men and A Decline in Prophets, previous novels in the Rowland Sinclair series. I do so hope that this latest will be just another in a long line of stories bringing Rowly Sinclair to his fans.
