Wesley King's series opening, Dragons vs. Drones, stars two teens on different worlds. On Earth, Marcus Brimley'a CIA analyst father disappeared during a hurricane when he was four years old, and was branded a traitor. On Dracone, Dree comes from a dragon rider family, but has worked in a smithy after her father and all other dragon riders were disgraced. Now, by government decree, dragons are hunted and slaughtered.

As well as having disgraced fathers - and an affinity for fire - in common, each teen has a secret. Dree has a Nightwing dragon brother, Lourdvang, whom she discovered as an abandoned infant and raised in a hidden cave. Tech genius Marcus has been building drones, and monitoring super-storms for years, seeking to understand what happened to his dad. Finally, he heads into the heart of a massive storm - and ends up on Dracone, in the middle of a drone attack on the capital.

The two teens meet, survive the attack, and work together to counter it and to form an alliance with dragons. They learn about the Egg, a powerful relic of ancient dragon magic. And they combine their knowledge and skills to build a very special drone of their own.

Though this middle grade novel is rather cumbersome at times, it has an intriguing concept and there is plenty of action to hold readers' interest. By the end of the first episode, the villain of the piece is revealed and a key quest launched.
