Author Bill Pronzini is well known in the mystery-writing field. He has been producing Nameless Detective mysteries for over thirty-five years. They have only grown in stature over that period of time. He crafts his stories in well-chosen words, with no unnecessary verbiage. He presents his story line and weaves a tale that is a delight to read.

Reminiscent of the books by Spillane or Hammett, the era of the tough-guy mysteries, Pronzini goes them one better. His characters are up front guys, who work under their own personal ethics. And get the job done with as little physical harm as possible.

Nameless is hired by Cory Beckett to find her brother. She claims to have been a model. Nameless doesn't quite buy that. And why have to look for Cory's brother? Falling out between siblings? Money problems?

While following the brother's trail, more is revealed about Cory – none of it good. She has a habit of marrying men with gobs of money who then suddenly become dead! The brother obviously wants to get out from his sister's thumb. He is frightened of her and by her. Cory is trying to get him to admit to a theft that he didn't commit so she wouldn't be involved. The young man lacks the courage to kill someone she insists must die.

While this is a short tale, Vixen packs as much punch as any other mystery book on the market. With a modern-day femme fatale. Trust me. It's a good one.
