Around 700,000 men perished during the Great War. Daisy is recuperating in a small village outside London after a horrific battle with bronchitis. Daisy's husband, Chief Inspector Alec Fletcher, arrives from London intending to take his fragile wife to lunch. Instead Daisy has accepted an invitation to dine with an old school friend. Willie and two of her friends have moved into an old house in the village. Instead of lunch, they find a decomposing corpse in the basement of this charming cottage. The odor just about does them all in. Of course, an investigation ensues, uncovering more possible suspects than can easily be handled. Daisy has a reputation at Scotland Yard for investigating on her own. She simply can't resist poking into where she doesn't belong. Even though, she upsets Alec's equilibrium, she somehow manages to do what she sets out to do. The Yard hates to give her credit, thinking this would only encourage her to continue detecting without the authorization of the authorities. Another coup for Daisy. Author Carola Dunn has a remarkable number of Daisy Dalrymple novels to her name – counting Superfluous Women, the total is 22! She has also written three Cornish mysteries.
