n 1980, Kelly Michelle Lund shot and killed famous movie director John McFadden. The then seventeen year-old spent twenty-five years incarcerated. She had kept vital information about the killing from everyone. Five years after her release on parole, Kelly's father-in-law, movie idol Sterling Marshall, is murdered!
O
f course, the first person suspected of the crime is Kelly. The narrative gets very deeply involved in Kelly's life out of prison and into what could possibly be the reason for her to kill such a very popular man.
T
he tautly written story will keep you guessing from the very first page until the twists at the ending. Kelly is a very private person and the reader feels privileged to be able to know just what is roiling through her mind. How she handles all that is thrown at her is such a big factor in her life. The intrusion of the press (still an issue today) is so distressing that Kelly must disguise herself if she even shows herself at a window. We wonder what she is hiding. And does this have anything to do with the murder?
W
hat Remains of Me
by Alison Gaylin takes the reader into the fabled world of Hollywood, offering an interesting glimpse of the reality that exists behind the scenes. Gaylin is a longtime entertainment writer as well as a two-time Edgar nominee and a Shamus-award winner.
What Remains of Me
is a novel well worth the read.
