S
et in Trinidad in the 1940s, this novel follows the life of a humble seamstress who lives in a seaside village. Marcia Garcia meets an East Indian policeman and their lives become entwined as they raise a family together and experience a series of vagaries that define a life and relationship that is far from being tranquil.
T
he story eventually moves to the United States as the couple's children grow older. Marcia harbors a family secret that eventually results in some tumultuous, traumatic events that rock the family and its well being.
A
lthough this gritty story loses some of its luster when the family moves away from Trinidad, it still is an entertaining read and marks the debut of a young woman who exhibits quite a bit of promise. The child of Trinidadian immigrants, Lauren Francis-Sharma is at her best when she is writing about life on the island her parents left behind when they moved to New York and then Baltimore.
