YA novels with a heroine suffering from a chronic illness are plentiful these days, but Nicola Yoon manages to put a great twist on this tried and true formula in Everything, Everything. In fact, everything about the novel is perfect for today's fan of YA fiction.

Madeline Whittier has been locked in her house for seventeen years, not as a punishment, but a means of survival. She has SCIDs, Severe Combined Immunodefiency, and the world outside could kill her. Madeline has never had a problem staying inside with just her nurse, Carla, and her mom for company. She spends her days reading and working on school projects that her tutors assign via Skype sessions. Basically, Madeline is happy inside her bubble.

All of that changes, though, when a new family moves next door, a family with a son her age. Olly is a stereotypical loner, but when he learns Madeline lives next door and cannot come out, he strikes up a friendship with her from their bedroom windows that face each other. Eventually, they start emailing and IMing, which Madeline thought would be enough, but she realizes she wants more and vows to live her life to the fullest, however short it might be.

Everything, Everything is an amazing read. First off, Madeline and Olly are just awesome characters. Their friendship is organic and genuine, which is great because the whole story hinges on this relationship. Also, Everything, Everything is a very fast-paced read. Yoon uses a variety of styles in her short chapters to make the pages fly by but still leave a very satisfying feeling. The pièce de résistance though is the twist that literally had me screaming 'OMG!' Nicola Yoon has an instant hit on her hands with this debut. Everything, Everything really is a must read.
