I just reviewed John Benedict's previous novel Adrenaline. His latest, Fatal Complications, is, if anything, even more thrilling.

Luke Daulton, a newly registered anesthesiologist, is feeling anxious about starting his new job at a local hospital. A patient undergoing routine childbirth with a C-section suffers an extremely rare and bizarre reaction to anesthesia and Luke steps in to give a hand. Unfortunately, the rescue attempt is too late and the patient dies. This causes concern to Luke as his wife is far along in her pregnancy and due to give birth at this same hospital.

Seems Luke was right to have misgivings. He finds much to be suspicious about. The more he checks into the workings of the hospital, the more he is sure that the administration is fudging the books and the day-to-day functions seem to be run by a dictator.

When his wife starts labor, Luke realizes he must be alert or suffer the consequences. Has there been a murder? Or murders? Is his immediate boss, Dr. Katz, involved in a conspiracy of some kind? While his wife is having a very complicated birth, Luke also fights for his own life.

The finale of Fatal Complications will have you holding your breath and sitting on the edge of your chair. Along with Adrenaline, author Benedict also has The Edge of Death to his credit. All three are worth a read. But you might find yourself taking a wide berth around hospitals in your area afterwards.
