As the novel opens she is known as Tanya Dubois, and married to a man it's hard to like. Clearly a marriage of convenience, so she is not bereft when Frank falls down a flight of stairs. But she does flee the scene, even though his death was, perhaps, accidental. All readers learn of this self destructive young woman's past is what we can glean from her communications with a man she knew years before. They were obviously very close at one time, but now she is bitter. Hair dyed brown she becomes Amelia. But it's hard to find work without proper identification and it's hard to live without funds. That's when she meets a female bartender, Blue, who recognizes a fellow fugitive and offers her help - for a price. She does what Blue demands and becomes Debra. Meanwhile, the authorities are on our heroine's trail, and not only for the cold case that set her in flight originally, but also because of questions raised by Frank's demise. Questions pull reader interest through this engrossing story. What happened long ago? Why did she flee? And how can this mess possibly be resolved? Read The Passenger to find out.
