Eric Walters' Regenesis is the sequel to his dystopian End of Days, which looked at what might happen if authorities become aware of a huge asteroid heading straight at Earth. In Walters' version, one hundred children were selected and trained to leave Earth and wait out the catastrophe in orbit. Regenesis shows the challenges they face there, under the leadership of our hero, teen Billy, 'the ultimate generalist'.

There's a big surprise for them on arrival at the space station, which significantly changes the leadership dynamics. Walters gives a very credible portrayal of the challenges faced by a group of young geniuses, in crowded conditions, watching the eradication of civilization and most of humanity below them on Earth as life steadily blinks out on its surface. Above, there are unexpected problems to deal with, betrayals and losses, but there is hope too as the planet warms again faster than anticipated.

One major disappointment for Billy is that they have had no contact with wealthy Joshua Fitchett, who masterminded their escape from Earth, and remained behind with another group hoping to survive below the surface. As this episode ends, five years after they left the planet, Billy leads a group back to the surface, not knowing what to expect there. I'm very much looking forward to finding out!
