Not only do readers get to enjoy spending time with Meg herself, but she has a steadily growing entourage - husband Michael, lively twins Josh and Jamie, brother Rob, cousin Rose Noire, eccentric parents, choleric grandfather - and Police Chief Burke. In this lively episode, Caerphilly is coping with a Halloween invasion. The town is promoting a festival to support local businesses, but surprisingly Meg is not in charge. The Mayor has hired Lydia Van Meter, who seems to be only doing a good job of getting in everyone's way. But Meg does have a key role. In addition to creating a multiplicity of costumes for her sons, he's in charge of the Goblin Patrol, a security force of volunteers helping the police keep order. They're soon badly needed! The episode title refers to Meg's Grandfather, the zoo owner, who dresses for the festival as Gandalf, surrounded by half a dozen real ravens! The trouble begins with body parts in his lion exhibit. Fortunately they're fake, part of a LARP (live action role-playing game) set up through social media by an unscrupulous agent. But worse follows - arson and murder in the Haunted House. What could be the motivation? Of course Meg finally figures it all out and confronts the killer. But all's well that ends well after a witch comes to her aid, and she even finds a secure location for the vampire ball. Tons of fun!
