A young African American girl is brought in to the ward in a catatonic state. On the verge of having a feeding tube inserted to nourish her, she begins to wake up but can tell the staff very little about herself or what caused her condition. She does tell them that her name is Candy. It is obvious to Zoe that the girl has been traumatized. But by whom and in what way? Candy awakens one day as another personality. Daneesha is not at all like Candy. She's argumentative, brash, outgoing, and claims not to know Candy. Just as Candy doesn't acknowledge Daneesha. Zoe has more problems than obstreperous patients. Her superior seems to be an alcoholic who is trying out drugs on Candy. Then he mandates a move that could even kill the young woman. Zoe must do what she can to save Candy without jeopardizing her position, one for which she has worked so hard and long. Not to even count the huge student loan. The Girl without a Name is a thriller that keeps the pages turning. However, there are so many acronyms for treatments and drugs that I often lost my focus. Note that Sandra Block has also written Little Black Lies, that was received with great acclaim.
