C
al Claxton has opened his own law practice in the city of Portland, Oregon. His first case is to aid a tagger (a graffiti artist), who has named himself Picasso! Cal was a former prosecutor in L.A.. Now he spends some of his time aiding young people in need of a lawyer. Pro bono.
C
al encounters another teen in need. Kelly learned how to climb with her father, who has since fallen to his death. She now climbs buildings to tag walls, displaying her disenchantment with the city government in glowing colors. One night, up on a four-story roof, she witnesses the killing of a woman. Kelly is spotted and feels that her life is in danger from the murderer.
K
elly realizes she was right to be afraid when someone she trusts is mutilated and killed. She is sure her friend refused to give her up. And a Cuban friend of Cal's is crushed by the death because the woman gunned down was his fiancée. Trying to help his friend, Cal runs into Kelly and tries to come to her aid as well. He needs her to talk about what she saw the night of the murder in order to help him find the killer.
T
his is not just another mystery. It is beautifully written and brings the reader into the story from the first page to the end. Suspense reigns. Thrills abound. Characters fit their roles as though born to them. I held my breath as Cal climbed a building with Kelly.
Never Look Down
is the third of the Cal Claxton series. I do hope more are on the way.
