The Daughter marks the debut of Jane Shemilt. This mesmerizing psychological thriller follows the story of a missing girl whose disappearance is compounded by the fact that her family didn't fully understand who the teenager truly was.

The novel's protagonist, a physician, has three daughters and when her fifteen year old disappears after school one day, Jenny's life is turned upside down. When a well publicized search for Naomi turns up no leads and the girl's case turns cold, the authorities assume the worst-case scenario has occurred and she is probably dead.

Refusing to accept the police's assessment of the case, Jenny continues the search for Naomi. Eventually the distraught mother begins to realize there was another side to her youngest daughter she was totally unaware of. As the real Naomi and the secrets she kept hidden emerge, Jenny is in for some major surprises and an unthinkable revelation.

Written by a British doctor, The Daughter hit the bestseller lists in the UK and was short listed for some major literary awards. The Daily Mail described the novel as 'a tautly coiled spring of suspicion and suspense which builds to a devastating ending'.
