He succeeds beautifully. The first volume, Swann's Way, is the only one currently available in English (translated by Arthur Goldhammer), but it is a gorgeous start. Graphic novels tend to be more accessible that great tomes of French literature, as Heuet and Goldhammer effortlessly show in this wonderful adaptation and translation. Heuet's art is decidedly French, but Proust's story translates well over time and space, a structure he played with a lot in In Search of Lost Time. The reader is easily lost in this wondrous dual story about a young boy and his neighbor, the Swann of the title. The richness of Heuet's art adds an extra dimension that cannot be found in the written word, and his playing with different character styles brings each passage to glorious life. Whether you are already a fan of Proust's In Search of Lost Time, or just want to try this masterpiece, Swann's Way is a great companion.
