I
t's a good day when I can open a mystery by author Eileen Brady. Her first was
Muzzled
and this new one is titled
Unleashed
. Since the author is a veterinarian, she is able to mix mystery with animal care and has come up with two winners to date.
D
r. Kate Turner is happy subbing for a vet who is on a world cruise and is taking over his house-care practice. Happiness flies out the door when a client, Claire Birnham, is found dead, apparently a suicide. Kate just can't believe the woman would kill herself and leave her dog Toto in other hands. Claire and Toto were devoted to each other. If not suicide, what then? Murder?
P
olice arrest a young, handicapped kennel worker. Kate knows the young man is incapable of murder and she argues with her policeman boyfriend about this. He warns her to stay out of police business. She makes numerous house calls and we tag along - and learn a few new things about animal care. I found this very interesting but never lost sight of the characters involved. And what characters they turn out to be.
A
uthor Brady is a fresh new voice in the genre – one that I welcome. Great beach reading.
