wasn't too sure I was going to like
Hover
by Anne A. Wilson. It's a novel written by an active-duty U.S. helicopter pilot. I didn't doubt the author was capable of writing a book. Just not one that I would enjoy.
W
as I ever wrong! I read every page – every word! And, when I was finished, wished for more. I thought it would be too technical for me. It was technical and I devoured every description of the parts and workings of a helicopter. I was amazed at the work that goes into planning a maneuver and the delicate handling of such a bird. As well as the very real danger faced.
T
he story? It's a good one. This is where the human element joins the technical, showing how well they can mesh. Helicopter pilot Lieutenant Sara Denning joins a naval battle group. She must be careful to blend in and not stand out as a woman in a man's world. That is hard to do as the brass choose her to fly extra flights when training for a true battle. The other pilots are beginning to resent her as being a sort of teacher's pet and flying missions that take flight time away from pilots trying to rack up hours in the air.
Y
es, of course, there is a love interest. Wilson handles this well – the meeting, falling in love, the problems that can arise. Well done. Tension between the man she realizes that she loves and another pilot escalates. Her boss seems to resent Sara for even just existing. Her roommate has begun to think she is getting special attention and turns her back on her.
S
ara has one personal failing that could put her in danger. She is put to the test with her life on the line.
Hover
is a really good read.
