Jane Casey's The Kill is the fifth in her British police procedural series starring Detective Maeve Kerrigan, who is partnered with a senior officer, the abrasive DI Josh Derwent. He needles her (and everyone else on the horizon) constantly.

Maeve is in a strong relationship with Rob, a fellow officer. And she has long admired her boss, Chief Superintendent Charles Godley. Unfortunately, she learned that he was feeding information to mob leader John Skinner, currently serving a life sentence. But she took no action. She also has a dangerous stalker, Chris Swain, who always seems to find her.

As this episode opens, a couple watching for badgers in the wild witness a police sergeant's murder instead. Maeve and Josh are called away from a colleague's wedding to investigate, and uncover some disturbing facts about the victim. They also discover that the killer had 'a good weapon, top-of-the-range ammunition, and the skill to use them.' Will he strike again?

They focus in on members of a gun club. Further killings only increase the pressure. When Maeve sees signs of John Skinner's involvement, she decides that she has to confront her boss about it. Then the next shooting strikes very close to home. And the next victim even closer.

I enjoy this series very much and The Kill was one of the best episodes to date. It ends on a cliffhanger that has me anxiously awaiting what's next for Maeve and her colleagues and loved ones.
