When she was two, her mother moved her and her older sister to live with their grandparents in Yugoslavia to get away from their dad, an abusive, suspected terrorist. Her father died in a bombing not too long afterwards. As an adult, Bunjevac wished to know more about her father, and the result is Fatherland. Using quarter-page black-and-white panels, Bunjevac lays out her history, her father's history, and Serbian history in a clear and concise manor in a graphic novel that manages to come full circle. The histories are just as bleak and stark as the artwork, and it makes for a stunning tale while creating the distance in the reader than Nina Bunjevac felt from her father.
