Thrown out of the detective bureau for punching a suspected child molester in the nose, Deputy Tim Hallett has finally gotten his life back in order. He is now a K-9 handler, working with a Belgian Malinois named Rocky. He has done extensive training and feels proud to call Rocky his partner.

A kidnapping case pops up, that is similar to the one that got him dismissed from the police force. As readers, we are cognizant of the kidnapper's gross thoughts as he trails his next victim, as well as Tim's musings on the newest missing young girl. And don't forget Rocky. We see the world from his viewpoint as well.

The movements of the molester continue but we have no real idea just who that person is. Tim's relationship with Rocky and how it came about is a very interesting part of the plot. The amount of work involved to train and work the canines is in direct relationship to the pleasure garnered from working closely with a dog who seems to know his handler so well.

We also pick up some info about police work that is authenticated by Born's work as a former U.S. Drug Agent and Special Agent with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Born is an award-winning author of eight novels including one dealing with law enforcement on the U.S./Mexico border written with TV broadcaster Lou Dobbs. All in all, Scent of Murder is a good read.
