She could no longer deal with the deaths and atrocities. Fiona wanted to emigrate to Canada. Instead, McCutcheon resides nine years later in 1983 in Long Kesh prison with no hopes of being released any time soon, as he was captured on that last raid. Fiona has moved on – to Canada and a new boyfriend. Too late, Davy finally agrees with her, that an end must be brought to the violence and death, after over two hundred years of rule by the British. Now and in the Hour of Our Death is a love story as well as an account of the Troubles involving the twenty-six counties of Eire, the six counties in the North of Ireland and England. Fiona and David are victims of the love of their country as well as their love for each other. This is just one story of the Troubles. It is an account of the lives of ordinary people caught up in problems not entirely of their making and how their futures are affected. The past should never be forgotten but we must look to the future. Patrick Taylor is also the author of many books of Ireland and Irish life. I have to admit I prefer his tales of an Irish Country Doctor and an Irish Country Village over a book of war. However, this one is well-written as are his many others. They bring me joy to remember the lovely days I have spent in that beautiful and welcoming country.
