Thirty-six-year-old Sophie Anderson (who soon sees herself as the older woman) has just been dumped by her architect husband. So she takes the advice that her feisty Aunt Fancy would have given and splurges the mad money her aunt left her on a summer rental. Sophie plans to break the divorce news to her children, teen Jonah and ten-year-old Lacey, while they're there. Soon after they settle in, thirty-year-old software entrepreneur Trevor Black shows up with four-year-old Leo, still struggling with the death of his self-centered mother, an actress who died from a heroin overdose. Leo has withdrawn and shows signs of obsessive compulsive behavior, worrying his dad. After they've worked out what happened - and checked each other's references - Sophie and Trevor decide to share the cottage for the summer months. But, though there is an instant mutual attraction, Sophie resists it, concerned about their age difference. As the season progresses, friends of each family come and go; Sophie goes out with a wealthy Bulgarian, making Trevor jealous; Leo's behavior steadily improves; Sophie rediscovers her love of music and plays the piano again; the two families get on remarkably well; and even Sophie's no-nonsense mother finds romance. If you're looking for a light, digestible and very satisfying spring/summer read, then you'll savor Nancy Thayer's The Guest Cottage.
