Lucy Toomey, political campaigner extraordinaire, has worked long hours with little sleep. But her diligence is going to pay off. Her boss is about to enter the White House and wants her at his side to help govern the country.

However, a personal tragedy intervenes. Lucy's sister Alice has died and left a strange will. While a teenager, Alice had a near drowning experience which left her a bit backward. The conditions of her will require Lucy to return to their home town to live in the family cottage for a certain span of time.

Can Lucy give up the very different lifestyle in Washington, D.C. to live in a quiet, small town on a lakefront where everyone will not only know her name but also her background? And every little detail of her life. Lucy meets Alice's quilting friends and becomes enamored of the work involved to create a useful, as well as beautiful, work of art.

It appears to Lucy that everyone who knew Alice loved her. Despite her difficulties with her reduced abilities, she was a driving force in her community. But Lucy has a deep, hidden secret that makes it almost impossible for her to live where she will face this secret every day.

The longer Alice's will requires Lucy to live in the family house, the more comfortable she becomes in her life. The addition of a male figure who seems interested in her makes life even more copacetic. Can she give up the pace of the Washington political life? More important, does she wish to?
