As you read this book you'll discover that the word cartoon has its origin in the Renaissance and that political cartoons can be traced back to broadsheets that were popular in Europe and the American colonies during the revolutionary period.

From Japanese manga to Mutt and Jeff created by Henry Conway in 1907, this fascinating book not only looks at the history and development of comics but also offers step-by-step instructions on how to turn doodles and rough sketches into comic art.

The author suggests 25 projects that will help the reader create his/her own comic characters and strip. At the front of the book is a helpful timeline that shows the important dates in the development of comics and the Words to Know boxes found throughout the book highlight key vocabulary connected to cartooning.

Even if you are not interested in actually creating your own comic strip, the general information Sam Carbaugh shares about cartoons and comics makes this book well worth reading.
