is the fifth in the Pru Marlowe
Pet Noir
series. It is another good one. Animal behaviorist Pru Marlowe receives a call about a kitten. She is shocked to find the cuddly little thing playing beside a body, that of Beauville lawyer David Canaday who has apparently died of a heart attack. His three daughters blame his death on drug interactions, allergies to cats, and each other.
P
ru has a special sensitivity to animals. She can pick up their thoughts as they communicate with her. Her own house cat Wallis seems to rule her home and resents Pru bringing this little orphan into their lives. Dog walking every day brings her into contact with a small Sheltie and she is given an earful by the Sheltie and a Bichon who insists Pru call him Growler, while his owner calls him by what he considers a wimpy name. Pru gets involved with the dead man's ex-law partner. His eaves have been invaded by squirrels and she is to clear them out and keep them from coming back. But she is also sure the man is somehow involved in his old partner's death.
P
ru apparently had a reputation as a
wild one
when she was growing up in Beauville. This reputation is brought to light as she quietly investigates on her own to clear the kitten of any wrongdoing. This is another fun and imaginative read by author Clea Simon.
