With Satan's Lullaby by Priscilla Royal we travel back in time to the year 1278 at Tyndal Abbey near Norfolk in England. While the weather there is perfect, the atmosphere at the Abbey is laced with anxiety. Prioress Eleanor feels that something must be terribly wrong when the head of her order in France sends her own brother, Father Etienne Davoir, to inspect the Abbey from its spires down to the deepest depths of the building – from its morals to its roof.

Prioress Eleanor knows something must be terribly amiss, but has no idea what it could be. A clerk accompanying Davoir falls dead from no apparent cause. This does not bode well for the Abbey. It is believed that sub-infirmarian Sister Anne deliberately poisoned the clerk.

Davoir is sure that Prioress Eleanor is trying to frighten him away before he discovers some unforgivable indiscretion on her part. Tie this all together with a baby about to be born and the midwife – Sister Anne - locked in a cell accused of premeditated murder!

Including Satan's Lullaby, author Royal has written eleven books in her 13th Century series, featuring Prioress Eleanor and Brother Thomas of the Order of the Fontevraud. This series is not only good reading but also induces a sense of the calm that must normally reign at the Abbey.
