n the space of a couple of months, Nicky Frank has suffered three head traumas, the latest when her car careened off a slippery road and into a deep ravine. Sergeant Wyatt Foster is left stumped as to the nature of this confusing accident and very confused victim, who insists her daughter, Vero, was with her in the car. An extensive search for the child turns up nothing except myriad questions about Nicky, her secretive husband Thomas, and ultimately whether the child named Veronica even exists.
F
urther investigation into Nicky and Thomas's past sheds little light on them or their puzzling situation. Even so, Wyatt is determined to get to the bottom of things, as is Nicky. Both become suspicious of the progressively dodgy Thomas. When he burns down their house and runs, it's clear he doesn't want anyone to continue poking around in their business. Is Thomas responsible for Nicky's injuries and if so, why does he want her dead? And if there had ever been a child named Vero, did she already fall victim to his ultimate agenda?
A
s always, Lisa Gardner weaves a complicated and serpentine plot where, from chapter to chapter, you think you've got it figured out, that is until she drops another dark twist. As in past books, she writes Nicky's POV in first person, taking the reader deep into her confused world and her growing mistrust of her husband. Having Wyatt Foster take the lead in this latest investigation is also a welcome addition as he doggedly pursues each thread to a sinister and shocking conclusion.
C
rash & Burn
is another stellar and engrossing read by an author who is one of the best in the business.
