Laura Nelson, formally a surgeon, is now Vice President of Research in a once very small pharmaceutical company, soon to be a very large pharmaceutical company. After the announcement of FDA approval for a drug to prevent rejection of newly transplanted organs they will be rolling in $$$.

But, as we all know, the best laid schemes o' mice an' men gang aft agley. Which happens here. Jake Harter purposefully loses some very important papers so that his Iraqi girlfriend will be able to stay in the United States. Forget the fact that he is married. He has plans for that stingy wife of his. He is a man who is certain that whatever he wants - and any means that he employs to achieve his desires - is okay with his peers.

Laura is recovering from the fall that ended her career as a thoracic surgeon. She is a widow. Tim, the man who has loved her for years, is getting up the courage to ask for her hand in marriage, hoping that her five grown children will approve. But first, a deep dark secret must be revealed. The pace of After the Fall by Patricia Gussin picks up at this point, heading for a breathtaking ending.

After the Fall is the sixth novel for this author, the fourth in her Laura Nelson series. The plot is a good, solid one, pulling in the many characters who move it along nicely, and incorporating global issues that are relevant today. As the thriller reaches its conclusion, there is a brief hint that this one is not the last we shall see of Laura.

I would like to have had a bit more descriptive material. I found it difficult to picture the surroundings or those involved in the action. And at times I felt that life for the individuals involved was moving a little too slowly. Then, the action would pick up and move nicely along.
