What she does not expect is the presence of Professor Ptolemy Archibald Grant, the staid grandson of the lord who has bequeathed Lucy's aunt the rubies. Archie, as Lucy immediately names him, is to act as their escort.

he first dozen or so chapters are somewhat tedious, but once the intrepid travellers finally begin their quest, Brockway takes her readers on a delightful and witty romp. The ever-optimistic Lucy and her stuffy Archie scour the French countryside for clues that will lead them to a fortune in rubies.
