T
his book has it all: the unpopular thirteen year old boy with a pesky younger sister, parents who go back on their word, a surprisingly cool grandfather, and drama ... lots of family drama. There's even a healthy helping of action and adventure served up in this book for young adults.
T
yson's ex-best friend, Bright, is starting to hang out with the popular kids. So, Tyson's closest friend is his grandfather, Gene. And for Tyson's thirteenth birthday, Grandpa Gene is planning on taking Tyson on his first elk hunt. But then Gene gets sick and moves into a nursing home and Tyson's parents won't let the oldest and youngest men in the family go hunting.

ut does that stop Tyson and Gene? Of course not! They'll just have to sneak out. Sounds like fun, right? Maybe, but there's a particularly vicious bear that has been mauling hikers and anyone who dares travel into her territory, in the very area the elk hunt is to take place.

side from dealing with a bear with an attitude problem and a grandfather with a kidney problem, Gene meets a woman, and Tyson likes the new girl at school. In addition to women and the hunt, a family secret is revealed, a secret that will shake everything Tyson thought he knew of his beloved grandpa right down to the core.

uthor Ryan Gebhart has created a gripping young adult novel that is both humorous and serious. I found the part on pruning, a pre-hunting ritual, uproariously funny. Let's just say pruning involves a jug of prune juice,
Jeopardy!
and a bathroom. So, grab a glass of prune juice and this novel and settle in for an adventure you won't forget!
