He is the proprietor of a successful restaurant and will be featured on a television show. He has just inheirited his grandfather's house, and he has a wonderful girlfriend. But Matt's seemingly perfect world is about to come crashing down, taking those closest to him with him. While renovating his new home, Matt discovers a locked box with disturbing contents, buried in the back yard. And he suspects the box may be his grandfather's. Meanwhile, Matt's girlfriend Sam, believes her mother was killed by a man dubbed The Butcher, a notorious serial murderer who targeted young women in the Seattle area. With Sam researching her mother's death and Matt researching the mysterious box he found in his yard, the pair comes closer to the dangerous truth. And as the truth is slowly revealed, changes in Matt jeopardize his career and his relationship with Sam. At the center of the mystery is Matt's grandfather Edward, the retired Chief of Police of Seattle who worked on the Butcher case and sent the murderer to prison. Did Edward convict the right person? What if he didn't? It was hard to put down this fast paced, action packed, gory, bone chilling murder mystery. I enjoyed the setting of Seattle - it's always fun to read about an area that you are familiar with. And although some of the plot is predictable, there were twists and turns I did not see coming, that left me reeling. Though well written and fascinating, I found the violence in this novel a bit too graphic and disturbing for my personal taste.
