The 29th installment of Mary Daheim's Bed-and Breakfast mystery series finds innkeeper Judith McMonigle Flynn and her cousin Renie heading to Whoopee Island for a quiet weekend. Well, perhaps quiet isn't quite the right word for this little outing.

House sitting for their aunt, the girls anticipate a little R & R but, as usual, Judith manages to stumble upon a corpse on the beach just hours after they arrive on the island. The dead man apparently was well liked by everyone in the small community, but obviously there was at least one person who harbored some animosity towards him.

As Judith and Renie get to know the residents of her aunt's area, Obsession Shores, they begin to realize that there is an undertow of tension - these folks may be retired but they are still very active in ways one would never have imagined.

Besides digging for clams on the nearby beach, the two women will be sifting through the interpersonal relationships and extracurricular activities that make this small enclave a regular West Coast version of Peyton Place!

Naturally, there are some very eccentric characters included in this little mystery and the island setting reflects the author's ability to capture the sights and sounds of her native Pacific Northwest home. A touch of humor combined with familiar characters and unpredictable plots have made this long running series very popular with older readers. It appears Daheim doesn't plan on retiring Judith and Renie any time soon, so expect more of same from this accomplished author.
