As former director general of the British MI5, she has a rich background to draw upon for this series centered on tenacious MI5 Intelligence Officer Liz Carlyle. It began with At Risk, and Close Call is the eightth (following The Geneva Trap) in the series. At this point, Liz is in an intimate relationship with French Military Intelligence officer Martin Seurat and has just returned from a three week Pyrenees holiday with him. It's the Arab Spring and CIA officer Miles Brookhaven is knifed in Syria. Later he's posted to Yemen, investigating arms deals. Evidence is uncovered that weapons are coming from the UK, so of course Liz starts digging. She travels to Paris, where she works with Isabelle Florian of the French domestic service, and with Martin. They find that a former friend and colleague of Martin's is involved - he now works as a middle man for arms sales and is sought by the French authorities. Martin manages to get information from him. Clues leads back to England, to Cheshire, where Liz finds that a police officer who was once her lover is involved. Slowly and steadily, they track down the arms dealers, culminating in a raid in Paris. Which is when all goes awry and Liz's research assistant Peggy Kinsolving takes over, with a chance to show her stuff in the field. Together they stop a jihadi plot.
