Set in Iceland, this mystery may send shivers up your spine. It's not that the crime here is so horrific that it chills you but rather that the setting and its wintry, frigid climate is as much a part of the story as are the secondary characters.

When a retired businessman is found dead and tied to the bed in a hotel room, the authorities suspect foul play. But Sergeant Gunna Gisladottir quickly discovers the man died of natural causes, albeit being in a rather compromising situation.

This opens a can of worms, though, because the woman who accompanied the elderly gentleman to the hotel is suspected of running a sex scam where she sets up her clients and then robs them. Apparently she has already absconded with a laptop with some rather sensitive information on it.

Not only is Gunna looking for this woman who disguises her true identity quite well, but apparently there are also other folks equally intent on locating her and they want to do more than just question her about her bedroom adventures.

If you haven't visited Iceland, this novel will provide a sense of the country and its inhabitants. A lengthy cast of characters, perhaps too many subplots, and quick changes of view can make this a bit of a quirky read at the outset, but if you stay with the story it will settle down. Your patience will be rewarded with what, in the final analysis, will be a fairly satisfying and entertaining experience.
