Eddy Harkess was on the rise as a narcotics detective in the Boston police department until a tragic occurrence relegated him to emptying parking meters. A real comedown. Humiliating. Especially when what happened was not his fault. His only involvement was being there when the fatality occurred.

As readers, we do not discover the reason for Eddy's demotion until around the middle of this really fine mystery debut. Third Rail has everything you could want in a mystery. Drugs, guns, bodies, cash. However, it also takes an unexpected turn when Eddy loses his gun a police issue Glock. While tracing his gun with a plastic gun in his holster Eddy discovers that there is a new and very dangerous drug making the rounds in Boston and its environs.

The reader can't help feeling sorry for Eddy, trying to maintain law and order with a toy gun. But the man is not a quitter. He starts his own investigation top find whoever is dealing the new drug the Third Rail as well as making a fortune supplying it.

Eddy's quest takes him into the inner heart of the city. Not to his surprise, he finds politicians and criminals mingling freely to conduct their business. Eddy takes great risks to stop the flow of the Third Rail into the hands of drug users. Some photographs are uncovered that will help him.

Third Rail by Rory Flynn is a very good read and I look forward to many more books with Eddy Harkness as the protagonist.
