Bruno Johnson, an ex-cop, is an ex-con on parole. His girlfriend Marie is the best thing that has happened in his life. She has faith in him and together they have determined that they will try to save young children who are on the edge in abusive lives. Bruno despairs of leaving it to the system to save these kids.

Together with his father, who shelters a small group of kids who might not make it in this world if their lives don't take a drastic turn, they plan to earn enough to take the children and flee to Costa Rica.

To garner enough cash, Bruno joins in an illegal scheme to make money, enough to see them to Costa Rica. Regular, legal employment won't make enough for their fares and to keep them until they can get jobs. He's sure that the authorities are on to him and is afraid he'll lose the kids. He takes a chance. And what a chance. Since Bruno's acquisition of these youngsters is on the wrong side of the law, he must be careful not to be seen out and about so that no one can follow him to his father and the youngsters.

The plot will keep you on the edge of your seat. The principal characters are strong, and determined to save these kids from situations that could cripple or kill them. Bruno's father is a great old guy, willing to give up his retired life to do what they all believe is right.

The Disposables by David Putnam has a plot that will take you by surprise. Putnam has seen it all, having put in his working time in narcotics, violent crime, criminal intelligence, hostage rescue, SWAT, internal affairs - name it, he's done it. I'm sure The Disposables will not be Putnam's one and only book. He must have plenty of plots in mind. I'm looking forward to his next book.
