One fall day Adam gets on his bike and starts pedaling. He does not stop nor does he go home. Adam is not out for a joyride. He is riding from his home in Monument, Massachusetts, to Rutterburg, Vermont, to find his father.

But is Adam's father really in Vermont? Adam recalls his journey and blocked memories in a series of recorded sessions with a doctor. At least he assumes the man he speaks to is a doctor. And Adam also assumes he is in a hospital. Is he really, though?

Then there is the mystery of the man in the gray suit. Adam can only recall a little information. The man visits sometimes at places he and his parents have lived, talking in hushed tones in a special room. However, Adam cannot remember if the man is there to help his family or to harm them.

Adam comes to realize that, in regard to his parents and himself, 'you can be intimate with people, live with them twenty four hours a day and not really know them.'

Acclaimed author Robert Cormier gives the reader a unique perspective and insight into the complicated world of the witness protection program and post traumatic stress syndrome in I Am The Cheese.

Full of suspense, this novel, originally published in 1977, still engages and enthralls new readers. From the start I was hooked, intrigued by the story and what the plot was leading to. This fabulous read won't disappoint readers ages thirteen and up.
