The Descent: Book Three of the Taker Trilogy    by Alma Katsu Order:  USA  Can Simon & Schuster, 2014 (2014) Paperback, e-Book     Reviewed by Martina Bexte Katsu's conclusion to her dark tale of the obsessive love of two immortals is every bit as engrossing as its predecessors, The Taker and The Reckoning. Lenore has spent the past four years living a content life with Luke, the doctor who gave up everything for her. The only things that shadow their life together are the nightmares about Jonathan (the man she'd always considered her great love) being brutally tortured in the underworld. Lenore is certain that only she can save him. But how can she leave Luke for Jonathan? Luke is stricken with cancer and once she's buried yet another lover, Lenore realises she must help Jonathan, or go mad. She knows the only person who can help her is Adair, the immortal who had turned her and ultimately made the better part of her life hell. Would he welcome her with open arms or make her suffer for the years she'd imprisoned and then abandoned him. Once she steps onto Adair's island retreat however, she discovers he's not the cruel and manipulative monster she remembers but a man willing to help her face her own personal demons, which include not only Jonathan and the many others she'd wronged, but Adair himself. Katsu has created two very flawed characters in Lenore and Adair, whose centuries-long love story is anything but clean and neat. In the past two instalments, I found Adair loathsome, a character so cruel and lost in darkness there could be no hope of redemption - until Katsu slowly unravels the last of the plot twists and surprising revelations. Some of those twists do seem a bit fortuitous and the ending is rather abrupt considering all that's gone on before, but overall, The Descent wraps things up in an unexpected and thought provoking way. If you're craving a story that's vastly different from the norm, then indulge yourself in The Descent, or better yet, the entire Taker trilogy.
